Everything you need to know about mixed feeding

Feeding dogs is a fascinating and multifaceted topic. How much food your dog needs will depend on your pet’s energy requirements and the energy content of the food. You should therefore carefully check the composition of the wet and dry food. If you are considering mixed feeding, it is important that you know the advantages and disadvantages of both types of food. You will then be able to develop a feeding plan that is tailored to your dog’s individual needs while at the same time making sure that it contains all the necessary nutrients for a happy, healthy life.

Choosing the right food for your dog often revolves around their preferences and needs. Both options – wet food and dry food – have their own advantages and disadvantages, which should be taken into account when making a decision.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF WET FOOD

A key advantage of wet food is that it has a high moisture content, which is of particular importance for dogs that do not drink enough water. It usually has a more intense taste and is more readily accepted by many dogs. It is also suitable for dogs with dental problems or older animals.

One disadvantage of wet food is that it has a shorter shelf life once the packaging has been opened. After opening, it should be stored covered in the refrigerator and consumed as soon as possible. It should also be fresh in the food bowl and eaten quickly to prevent it from going off.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF DRY FOOD

In contrast, dry food has a long shelf life and can be stored at room temperature for longer periods of time. It is also easy to measure out, simple to serve and can remain in the bowl throughout the day without deteriorating. It can contribute to dental health thanks to the dog chewing on the firm kibbles.

One disadvantage of dry food is the lower moisture content, which can lead to insufficient fluid intake in dogs that do not drink enough. It can also be less appealing to choosy dogs, because the aroma or taste is less intense.

MIXED FEEDING AND TIPS FOR CHANGING YOUR DOG’S FOOD

A combination of wet and dry food can combine the advantages of both types of feeding. This mixed approach ensures adequate hydration, while also taking advantage of the benefits of dry food, such as the support of dental health. It is important to maintain the correct dosage and balance in order to ensure a diet tailored to the needs of your dog.

Successful mixed feeding:

1. Ratio of wet and dry food

A good balance is important. It is usually recommended to provide around 50% wet food and 50% dry food.

2. Individual needs

Every dog has its own personal preferences. Some dogs prefer specific types of food. Watch your pet and adjust the food individually

3. No sudden changes of food

If you are planning to change your dog’s food, make sure that you do this gradually to ensure that its intestinal flora has time to get used to it. When switching food, start off with around a third of the new food, and then increase the proportion continuously over a period of 10 days until finally the dog only has the new food.

4. Separate or mixed

You can give your dog wet and dry food either separately or mixed together, depending on what it prefers.

In order to successfully switch to mixed feeding for your dog, it is important to match both the type and amount of food to your pet’s individual needs. Factors such as the dog’s activity level, drinking habits, weight and age play a decisive role in determining the correct amount.
